What is Botox?
Botox is a cosmetic injectable derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It contains a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily paralyzes muscles when injected in small doses. While it's widely known for its cosmetic applications, Botox is also used to treat various medical conditions such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraines, and muscle spasms.
Botox Benefits
Aging can take a toll on both your appearance and your self-confidence. Watching your previously tight, supple skin begin to sag and wrinkle can be difficult. But the appearance of a few crow's feet or smile lines on your face doesn't mean you're destined to look old for the rest of your life. Botox injections can minimize wrinkles and give the impression that you're aging backward. Here are some top benefits this remarkable aesthetic treatment has to offer:
- No unsightly scars or invasive surgical incisions
- Rapid treatment times
- Smoother, younger-looking complexion
- Visible results in as little as one week
- FDA-approved treatment for facial wrinkles and fine lines
- Minimally uncomfortable injections
Botox Before and After*
Viewing Botox patients' before and after photos can give you an idea of how effective this treatment is. It's also one of the best ways to determine whether injections are right for you. Only trust a qualified, skilled provider to perform your injections for optimal results. Keep in mind that it's normal for individual treatment results to vary.*
Botox Treats
Botox is primarily used for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. It works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles responsible for causing wrinkles, such as frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines. Additionally, Botox can be used to lift the eyebrows and improve the appearance of the jawline.
In addition to its cosmetic applications, Botox is also used to treat medical conditions including chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle stiffness or spasms.
How long does Botox last?
The effects of Botox typically last between three to four months, although individual results may vary. Over time, the muscle activity gradually returns, and wrinkles and lines may reappear. To maintain optimal results, we recommend scheduling follow-up appointments every three to four months or as advised by our experienced practitioners.
Will My Face Look Worse After Botox Wears Off?
Some people mistakenly believe that their face will look much more aged after Botox than it looked before injections. But this simply isn't true. Botox doesn't cause your face to age any faster after it wears off. Instead, your complexion will gradually return to how it looked before you received injections.
However, if you consistently receive Botox injections over the course of years, your skin may look older than you remembered it before you began getting injections. That's because your complexion continued aging during that time, but the neurotoxin injections prevented you from seeing the results of the natural aging process.
Some people choose to never return to their former appearance by continuing to receive maintenance Botox injections. They may do this every few months or a couple of times per year. If you'd like to set up a maintenance schedule, we can help you determine the recommended treatment frequency for your aesthetic needs.
How does an appointment work?
When you schedule a Botox appointment with us in Orlando, Dr. Phillips, you'll first meet with one of our skilled practitioners for a consultation. During this consultation, we'll discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, and any concerns you may have. Based on your individual needs, we'll develop a customized treatment plan tailored to achieve your desired results.
On the day of your appointment, our practitioner will administer the Botox injections using a fine needle. The procedure is relatively quick and minimally invasive, typically taking around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure and can resume their normal activities immediately afterward.
Following your Botox treatment, you may experience some mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects are temporary and usually resolve within a few days.
Botox Aftercare
After Botox injections, you may wonder what you should and shouldn't do. Fortunately, you can resume most normal daily activities right away. However, here are some aftercare instructions you should follow to help improve your recovery experience:
- Wait at least 24 hours before exercising
- Avoiding rubbing the treatment sites for at least 24 hours (or longer if you're experiencing swelling or bruising)
- Don't lie down for at least three hours after your injections
You should also avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Naproxen, Aspirin, and Ibuprofen for at least 24 hours. They can increase your likelihood of bruising.
Does Botox Cause Any Side Effects?
Botox can cause some side effects, but they're almost always mild and fleeting. They may include inflammation, skin sensitivity, and redness at the treatment site. Rarely, serious symptoms like sinusitis and respiratory infection could develop. See emergency medical attention if you experience serious symptoms like shortness of breath, blurred vision, slurred speech, or trouble swallowing.
